SOFIA GEFYR
On this page you will find art and design that is designed and crafted by me, Sofia Gefyr.
I am born 1984 in Luleå in the north part of Sweden.
Since I was a child i have always been creative, painting and drawing and disappeared into a calm it has given me. The only subject in school that interested me was art and form. After I studied art and design in high school, i worked for a few years but had long felt that I wanted to study art again but more serious.
Then I started my artistic journey when i got in at an art school in Luleå where we got to try many different mediums. It was shaping something with my hands that I was interested, so ceramics and sculpture became what I got hooked on the most.
Working with sculpture and ceramics is a long process and time is often short. You have to have a lot of patience when working with clay. It takes several years to get different ideas to come to fruition and my journey has really only just begun, even though I graduated from my last education in 2017.
I live in Lidköping in Västra Götaland and have my ceramics studio at home.
I have two small children, so I can work in my studio when there is time, but then I also have time to reflect on my creativity and plan for future sculptures and creative ideas.
I create my works by hand using various techniques in ceramics. I am educated in ceramics and art, 6 years of full-time studies.
"In my creation, I have a vision that my works are old finds or treasures that carry an interesting history. They may, for example, have been found on the bottom of the sea, in the soil or in a forgotten place.
Archaeology and marine archaeology are something I find very interesting. The objects that have been found buried and forgotten have over time acquired a beautiful patina of various kinds that inspires me.
With different ceramic techniques, a new "find" grows and it is the patination process that is most exciting. When you see the end result, you can begin to imagine what history the object carries."
My surname Gefyr is an old soldier's name that an ancestor had that I took back. It means Give light house to fire a weapon. My ancestor fought in war for an old king we had in Sweden and our kingdom and was given that name. I felt that the name suited me and my art because I am inspired by history and partly create medieval weapons in ceramics.
